It has an area of about 80 miles around with many vestiges of its ancient cultures and a spectacular natural scenery, Mayan ruins and lakes and volcanoes, and colonial cities near like Antigua Guatemala.

One of the gems near Ciudad de Guatemala, about 45 miles away, is the city of La Antigua, declared a World Heritage Site in 1979 by UNESCO and that is easily accessible when you arrive to the airport just taking a shuttle for a combi van for about 80 quetzals, equivalent to 8 euros.

For those who decided an adventure trip, the most appropriate thing is to get an accomodation in one of the many hostals or hotels you have in the city and where you don’t need to book before.

One of them is the Hostal Antigua, in the city center, that offers rooms for 5€/night with wifi.

If you choose this type of hostels you will be able to enjoy the city just having a walk, beginning the tour from the Central Park, where you will find the Town Hall and the cathedral. Antigua is the coffee capital, so you will find many cafés where you can try a lot of varieties while you look the calm life of this colonial city.

Mostly all the monuments visits are for free as many of them are vestiges and ruins. You must be careful on where you pay as many of the ruins are not historical but because of the earthshakes.

However, the Cerro de la Cruz is an idyllic place to take some pictures of the city, which can be reached by tourist by bus, metro, taxi or just walking. The city has other attractions like the craft market, the municipal market where you cantest varieties of exotic fruits and the bus station, a museum of colorful buses of the 50s.
